The Canadian Rockies, Alberta and B.C., Canada

The Rocky Mountains are so high that they create their own weather. You'll have everything thrown at you and then you luck out with days like this! There's nothing like the sun above and fresh powder on the ledges and peaks of the mountains. The Australians on my tour have dreamed about this, and now they are seeing it for real!
The Icefeilds Parkway is the most amazing road in the history of the world! I may be biased because I am from here, but I would like to present to the evidence to back up what I am saying! I'm thinking that this is an "open and shut" case! It really doesnt get any better than this.

Juneau, Alaska and the Mendenhall Glacier

Juneau has been the Capital City of Alaska since 1906. It is 950 nautical miles north of Seattle and sits along the Gastineau Channel. The population is about 31,000 ( half the size of Chilliwack) However if you consider the total land area of Juneau, it is the second largest municipality in the United States and larger than Rhode Island or Delaware. (8430 square km)

Juneau sits at the foot of Mt. Juneau. You can hike it from Mount Roberts when the snow has melted by mid July.

Most of the passengers have booked all sorts of shore excursions such as Heli/Floatplane scenic glacier flights to the Mendenhall or Taku Glaciers. On the glaciers there are activities like ice climbing and dog sledding. Others will go ziplining or kayaking. Alot of people choose to just roam throughout the town and play it by ear. For those people I recommend that they take the Mt. Roberts Tramway (located right along the cruise ship dock) to the top and check out the incredible views! Theres a great restaurant up there and an Amazing Bald Eagle that is being rehabilitated from an injury.

You will probably get annoyed with the pushiness of the staff in the Cruise Line owned diamond shops throughout town. However there are alot of great local shops with interesting Alaskan souveniers. If you don't want to miss any big sports events go to the Viking on Front Street. They have 5 big screens and it's a step above many of the other bars in Juneau.

Alot of the house are on gangways and catwalks and supended along a steep slope or build on stilts. It's a great exercise, but you can imagine what a few feet of snow turns this place into in the winter.

Looking across to Douglas Island

Highway 7 and the Mendenhall Loop road goes to the Mendenhall Glacier and connects the outer areas of Juneau. There are actually no roads leading into the Juneau area itself. You have to fly or enter by ship. The Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) system is a cruicial link to the rest of the state.

There are trails that you can take that will take you to the edge of Nugget Falls. From there you get a close up view of the incredible Mendenhall Glacier. If you are lucky you might see massive sections of the front of the glacier breaking off and falling into the water.
